The term evidence based medicine includes knowledge, which is based on experience and
research. This lecture will try to explain the difference between qualitative and quantitative
research. It will also clarify the most common concepts in research and give relevant examples
from science in the area of intensive care.
One of the challenges in research is how to use the results of important studies. How to
implement nursing research and standardize these procedures on the ward?
In an ICU in Sweden we work in a multi-professional team with representatives from professional
categories, anaesthesiologist, and nurses with post-graduate qualifications in Intensvie Care. Last
year this team worked with prevention of VAP Ventilation associated Pneumonia, improving
methods and treatment. This year we have focus at sepsis related to invasive catheters.
