In the intensive care setting, the transition from curative interventions to palliative care is a complex process with many important points at which decisions have to be made about patient management. Although End of Life recommendations for critically ill patients exist, development of a clear pathway for EOL care has been problematic. There are great differences in end-of-life medical practices around the world. Practices vary based on many factors, including geography, religion, culture, and patient, physician, and institutional characteristics. Despite the fact that most ICU deaths follow the withholding or withdrawing of life-prolonging therapies worldwide, there are important regional variations. This presentation will discuss evidence regarding transitions from curative treatment to palliative care for adult patients in ICUs worldwide and to identify nurses role.
